Fostering Civic Engagement & Participation presented by the Smithsonian's Museum of American History
How can educators of all disciplines prepare students to be active and informed participants in a democracy? Join us to explore this question through the lens of the Smithsonian Institution collections! Discover how museum objects, artifacts, and methods of analysis can support learners think through the challenges and opportunities of living in a democracy and inspire civic action.
Facilitators
Orlando R. Serrano, Jr., Ph.D.
Orlando Serrano manages the National Museum of American History’s educational programs for young people and educators. He supports and develops informal educational and leadership experiences for students, professional development workshops for educators, and curriculum content. Dr. Serrano is an experienced educator with expertise in teacher professional development, assessment, and instruction. Dr. Serrano’s research and writing have been funded by a Ford Foundation Fellowship as well as National Science Foundation and NSF EDGE-SBE Grants.
Megan Linehan
Megan Linehan is an education specialist at the National Museum of American History. Megan has experience teaching secondary history and adult ESL, developing curricular materials, and leading afterschool academic programming. She is excited to spark curiosity and conversation through the National Youth Summit.
